How to wash mulmul so it lasts five summers

Mulmul is a loosely woven cotton, and everything that makes it comfortable also makes it easy to ruin. Wash it separately in cold water for the first three washes — natural dyes release the most pigment early, and indigo in particular will find anything white in the same bucket. Do not wring it. Press the water out between your palms, or roll it in a towel. Wringing breaks the yarn at the fold and that is where a mulmul kurta eventually tears. Dry in shade, never direct sun: ultraviolet lifts natural dye faster than detergent does. Iron on the reverse while very slightly damp. Expect about two percent shrinkage on the first wash — our measurements are published post-shrinkage, so the size you ordered is the size you will keep.
